Large-format porcelain tiles — from 45×90 cm and 60×120 cm up to 100×100 cm or even 120×120 cm — have become a defining feature of contemporary design.
Their clean lines and reduced grout joints create a refined, uninterrupted look that works beautifully in both indoor and outdoor spaces.
However, designing with these larger units requires careful consideration to achieve the best results.
Planning Layout and Proportion
Large-format tiles work best in open, uncluttered spaces where their full scale can be appreciated.
When planning the layout, take room dimensions and viewing angles into account. Use full tiles along main sight lines, such as through a doorway or across a patio, and position any cuts in less visible areas. Symmetry around central features like doors or windows helps maintain balance and flow.
Managing Grout Joints
One of the key aesthetic advantages of large tiles is fewer grout lines. Keep joints narrow —
typically 2–3 mm indoors and 3–5 mm outdoors — and select a grout colour that closely matches the tile. This helps create a near-seamless finish and accentuates the sense of scale.
Surface Texture and Slip Rating
For outdoor use, ensure tiles have a minimum R11 surface rating to provide safe grip underfoot, while indoor areas can use smoother finishes. Choosing complementary finishes across thresholds allows for continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces without compromising safety.
Handling and Installation
Larger tiles are heavier and require more precise handling. Always lift with suction frames or
two-person teams to prevent edge damage. A full mortar bed or high-quality adhesive coverage is essential to avoid voids under the tile, which can cause cracking over time. Allow for slight falls outdoors to promote drainage.
Visual Impact
Large tiles can make small spaces appear more spacious and open, while in larger areas they create a dramatic, architectural feel. Combining them with matching porcelain wall panels or outdoor cladding extends the visual field, delivering a cohesive, modern finish that feels expansive and effortless
