So, what is the difference between Riven and Sawn? The main difference is that sawn paving has been cut by machine, giving it a smooth surface and clean lines. Sandblasting is a method using high pressured air to spray sand particles at the surface of the stone. Riven sandstone on the other hand has been split naturally along its layers. This is what provides the paving stone with a truly authentic and naturally beautiful finish. The splitting process leaves natural variations throughout each slab.
